Dulce,  The Baker

Hola! I’m Dulce (“sweet” in Spanish) and I have been a baked goods fan for as far as I can remember… also recorded in history as a bunny shaped cake I got for my 3rd birthday.

So, I am not quite sure which one to blame: my name, my sweet tooth, or my joy for baking for the people I love, but whether it is polvorones for breakfast, a birthday cake, or Frida kahlo cake pops for a fundraiser, I strive to create baked goods that are delicious and meaningful.

Growing up in a small apartment in Mexico City, our oven was mostly used as storage; yet, I fondly remember the days when my mom, brother and I would empty it to make room and bake bolitas de nuez while at my abuelita’s, my tias, mom and I would knead dough and prepare homemade pineapple, guava and strawberry marmalades and bake dozens of pays!

After moving to Minnesota to go to college and later having my own kids, I began to bake artisanal Mexican pastries that I couldn’t find easily – such as pan de muerto for Day of the Dead and rosca de reyes for Three Kings’ Day – to teach my kids about the traditions I grew up with.

After a thirteen-year career working at a local college in Minneapolis with first-generation and multicultural students, I found myself looking for a new way to build community, celebrate milestones and achievements, and create a better understanding of what Mexico has to offer (no more “burrito pinata!”).

The outcome? A new journey as the owner and head baker of Dulceria Bakery!

Thank you for joining me in this new adventure and for trusting me to create for you, your family, your community, and your upcoming events a delicious and beautiful assortment of treats inspired by family recipes, Mexican history, childhood memories and my genuine love for artisanal baking.
