Whether you are looking for a basic model or something with all the bells and whistles, we have got you covered. So, grab a spoon and let us get started!

What Is An Ice Cream Maker?

An ice cream maker is a device used to make ice cream at home. The most common type of ice cream maker uses a container filled with ice and salt to create a cool environment for the ice cream mixture. The mixture is then churned until it becomes thick and creamy.

There are also electric ice cream makers that use a motor to churn the mixture. These machines are popular because they can make large quantities of ice cream in a short amount of time. However, they are also more expensive than manual machines.

No matter what type of machine you use, there are a few basic steps to making ice cream:

  1. Combine the ingredients in a bowl or pot.
  2. Place the bowl or pot in the ice cream maker.
  3. Churn the mixture for about 20 minutes.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

How does Ice Cream Maker work?

An ice cream maker is a machine that is used to make ice cream. It does this by freezing the ingredients and then churning them together. This creates smooth and creamy ice cream.

There are two main types of ice cream makers: manual and electric. Manual ice cream makers require you to mix the ingredients together and then put them in the freezer. Electric ice cream makers do all the work for you. They usually have a bowl that you put the ingredients in, and then the machine will freeze it and churn it for you.

Ice cream makers can be quite expensive, but they are worth it if you love homemade ice cream. Not only are they fun to use, but they also produce a much higher quality ice cream than you can get from the store. So, if you are looking for a new kitchen appliance to add to your collection, an ice cream maker is a great option.

Ice cream makers come in all shapes and sizes, so be sure to do your research before you buy one. There are a lot of great options out there, so you are sure to find the perfect one for your needs.

Benefits Of Using Ice Cream Maker

There are many benefits of using an ice cream maker. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  1. You can make a variety of flavors of ice cream. With an ice cream maker, you can create all kinds of flavors, from vanilla to strawberry to pistachio.
  2. You can make more complex flavors of ice cream. An ice cream maker allows you to add ingredients like chocolate chips, nuts, or candy bars to your ice cream for a richer flavor.
  3. You can make large quantities of ice cream. If you have a big family or like to entertain, an ice cream maker is a great way to make large quantities of delicious ice cream quickly and easily.
  4. You can customize your ice cream. An ice cream maker gives you the ability to adjust the ingredients and flavors to create the perfect ice cream for your taste buds.
  5. You can save money. Buying an ice cream maker is a one-time investment that will save you money overall, as you will no longer have to buy store-bought ice cream.

So, if you are looking for a way to make delicious and customized ice cream, an ice cream maker is definitely the way to go. With so many benefits, it is hard to resist this kitchen appliance!

Factors To Consider When Choosing The Best Ice Cream Maker

Type Of Ice Cream Maker

When it comes to choosing the best ice cream maker, there are a few factors you need to take into consideration. The most crucial factor is the type of ice cream maker. There are three types of ice cream makers: manual, electric, and compressor.

  • Manual ice cream makers require you to stir the mixture constantly while it freezes. This can be a bit of a hassle, but it is a great option if you are on a budget.
  • Electric ice cream makers do all the work for you – all you must do is add the ingredients and press a button. However, they can be expensive.
  • Compressor ice cream makers are the most expensive option, but they produce the best quality ice cream.

Capacity

Another thing to consider is the size of the ice cream maker. If you are only making ice cream for yourself or a small group, a small ice cream maker will do. But if you are hosting a party, you will need a larger one.

Type Of Ice Cream

The third factor to consider is the type of ice cream you want to make. Some ice cream makers are specifically designed for making gelato, while others are better for making regular ice cream. If you plan to make a variety of different types of ice cream, you will want an ice cream maker that can do it all.

Price

The fourth factor to consider is price. Manual ice cream makers are typically the least expensive, while compressor ice cream makers are the most expensive. However, there are a wide range of prices in between, so you should be able to find an ice cream maker that fits your budget.

Features

Finally, think about what features you want your ice cream maker to have. Some machines come with multiple bowls so that you can make several batches of ice cream at once, while others have timers so that your ice cream will be ready when you are. Choose the features that matter most to you and your family.

With these factors in mind, you should be able to choose the best ice cream maker for your needs. Happy freezing!

The Cuisinart ICE-21 produced some of the creamiest and tastiest ice creams in our tests. This appliance, which utilizes a frozen bowl insert, is less expensive than a compressor model. Despite its simple design, it is a powerhouse, producing ice cream at a fraction of the cost and faster than the competition. The ICE-21 is simple to operate with a single switch, and because it is lighter and smaller than compressor machines, it may be more accessible to transport and store. The ICE-21 has been used by renowned ice cream makers such as Jeni Britton Bauer of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams to develop recipes, and it consistently produces creamy frozen desserts. You will need to schedule your churning around the overnight freezing of the bowl, which will also require freezer space. To make multiple batches in a row, you need only acquire an additional freezer bowl.

With a self-cooling compressor model, such as the Whynter ICM-201SB, it is possible to make multiple batches of ice cream in a single day without pre-freezing an insert. Since 2017, we’ve evaluated numerous Whynter ice cream makers, and this model continues to outperform the competition. In our 2021 tests, the ICM-201SB produced ice cream that was fluffier and significantly less icy than ice cream made by budget models such as the KitchenAid attachment or the Nostalgia ice-and-salt machine.

If you prefer a lighter, more mousse-like texture, you may enjoy ice cream from the ICM-201SB, whereas if you prefer a denser consistency, you may choose one of our other recommendations. The ICM-201SB is taller than most other ice cream machines we evaluated, but its footprint is smaller, requiring less counter space. It has multiple modes and a timer to help you create the perfect dessert.

Even though the removable shallow bowl can be a little slippery to handle, we had no trouble scooping frozen treats or cleaning them. Like most compressor-cooled models, this ice cream maker is more expensive than those that require the bowl to be frozen beforehand.

The comparable, smaller-capacity, 1.6-quart Whynter ICM-15LS is a good alternative that produces denser ice cream and typically costs less than the ICM-201SB. However, we’ve discovered the price difference between the two machines fluctuates significantly.

Key Features
  • Self-contained frozen dessert maker that does not require pre-freezing; makes ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet
  • Stainless steel housing; Reliable built-in audible timer
  • 2.1 quart (2 liter) capacity; -0.4ºF to -31ºF Cooling temperature
  • BPA-free stainless steel removable mixing bowl and churn blade for easy storage and effortless cleaning
  • LCD timer control; Motor Protection Function that shuts off to prevent damage if the mixture freezes solid
PROS
  • The motor protection function shuts off to prevent damage if the mixture freezes solid
  • Made of high-quality material that offers an extended durability
  • Features a simple design that makes it easy to set up and use
CONS
  • May take time to cool down

3. Upgrade pick: Lello 4080 Musso Lussino 1.5-Quart Ice Cream Maker

$699.99

as of October 29, 2024 11:42 am

The sleek and shiny Lello 4080 Musso Lussino ice cream maker is the crème de la crème. It churned out the creamiest, tastiest ice cream faster than any other machine we tested, and it features self-cooling technology like the Whynter ICM-201SB. It is expensive, enormous, and heavy, and it resembles a stainless-steel spaceship from 1960s science fiction that landed on the kitchen counter. But if you make multiple batches of ice cream per week, intend to turn ice cream making into a profession, or want the best, the Musso Lussino is your best bet. It is user-friendly, with a timer and a button to pause spinning so you can add ingredients or check the progress of your ice cream.

This machine produces the silkiest homemade ice cream we’ve ever tasted after years of testing. It may be more challenging to clean than our top pick because it lacks a removable bowl and is large and heavy. For ice cream lovers, the hefty price tag is well worth it. However, the high price tag may discourage casual dessert makers.

Key Features
  • 1-1/2-quart capacity bowl freezes 3 quarts of ice cream or sorbet per hour
  • Fully automatic: pour ingredients into bowl, press two buttons
  • Timer controls operation for different frozen confections
  • Housing, bowl, paddle made of stainless steel for easy cleaning
  • 12 inches wide, 11 inches high, 18 inches deep; weighs 38 pounds
PROS
  • Makes incredible quality ice cream
  • Built like a tank
  • Compressor and paddle work separately
  • Casing doesn't stain
CONS
  • It's very expensive!
  • Timer keeps going when it's stopped
  • Mine has a wobbly leg!
  • 1 year warranty only

4. Cuisinart ICE-70 Electronic Ice Cream Maker

Cuisinart was one of the first companies to popularize electric ice cream makers for home use, and the company’s product offerings continue to be enhanced. Due to various factors, the ICE-70 earned our top spot after lab and home testing. This one produce a whopping 2 quarts of ice cream per batch and has an easy-to-read LCD control panel.

There are settings for ice cream, gelato, and sorbet that determine the mixing paddle’s speed. Each option’s time is automatically set but can also be adjusted manually. When the time expires, the machine turns off automatically. The distinctive gelato setting stood out to our home product tester due to its slower churn, a characteristic of authentic gelato.

In laboratory tests, the Cuisinart outperformed comparable freezer bowl models by a wide margin. It was elementary to set up once the bowl was frozen, producing ice cream with a velvety texture. When the cup is removed, there is a convenient hole for pouring add-ins into the ice cream. Our home and lab testers appreciated the ability to mix contents without removing the lid. In addition, our lab testers noted that the upright, compact design made it simple to store and that it was light enough to transport around the kitchen.

The paddle of this machine was also exceptional. When M&Ms were added to ice cream, they were evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Both the paddle and freezer bowl could be cleaned by hand with warm, soapy water.

This ice cream maker can be loud while churning, which is a drawback. The 2-quart freezer bowl must be refrigerated overnight for optimal results, so the ice cream cannot be made on the spur of the moment. We recommend storing it in the freezer to be readily available whenever you have an ice cream craving.

If you cannot locate the ICE-70 model, the ICE-60 model provides the same design and functionality minus the automatic timer.

Key Features
  • SUPERIOR FUNCTION: Create two quarts of delicious frozen treats in just 20 minutes with an improved paddle and faster processing time
  • CAPACITY: Makes 2-quarts of your favorite ice cream, frozen yogurt, gelato or sorbet

  • INCLUDED: Ingredient spout with integrated measuring cup for easy pour with less spill also a recipe book with lots of options
  • LIMITED 3-YEAR WARRANTY: Refer to user manual for troubleshooting steps and questions surrounding warranty policies – this product is BPA free
PROS
  • Built-in timer
  • Automatic and manual modes
  • Opening for adding ingredients
CONS
  • Heavy freezer bowl

5. Best Budget: Cuisinart ICE-21RP1 Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker

Cuisinart ICE-21RP1 1.5-Quart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker, Double Insulated Freezer Bowl elminates the need for Ice and Makes Frozen Treats in 20 Minutes or Less, Red

Cuisinart is a reputable manufacturer of ice cream makers and offers models for every price range. The ICE-21 may not have as many features as some of the brand’s more expensive models, but it is fully automatic and promises to produce homemade ice cream in 20 minutes. However, our home tester discovered that you must have a pre-frozen bowl.

The procedure is designed to be straightforward and mess-free. As a “cold-scrape” model, the double-insulated freezer bowl fits easily into the base, the mixing paddle fits into the base, and the plastic cover keeps everything in place. The paddle scrapes frozen batter from the interior bowl walls and incorporates it back into the mixture as the bowl rotates. After approximately twenty minutes, our home tester had ice cream that resembled a soft serve. At that point, you must immediately place everything in the freezer to prevent crystallization.

Even with its simple design, this can assist you in preparing a delicious batch of ice cream. If you wish to add mix-ins, toss them directly into the freezer bowl as the mixture nears completion. This model has a smaller capacity than other Cuisinart models (1.5 quarts), so be mindful of batch sizes when following recipes. During testing, our tester experienced overflow when she used a recipe that was not properly scaled down. Nonetheless, cleanup is simple. Our tester reported that even the laziest dessert lovers would find little to complain about here.

Key Features
  • SUPERIOR FUNCTION: The new patent-pending mixing paddle makes frozen treats in 20 minutes or less
  • COOL FEATURE: Double-insulated freezer bowl eliminates the need for ice
  • CAPACITY: Makes up to 1-½-quarts of your favorite ice cream or frozen yogurt
  • EASY TO USE: Easy lock transparent lid with large spout makes adding ingredients simple and mess free
  • LIMITED 3-YEAR WARRANTY: Refer to user manual for troubleshooting steps and questions surrounding warranty policies – this product is BPA free
PROS
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean
  • Produces texture like soft serve
CONS
  • Smaller capacity than other similar models
  • Need to freeze bowl 24 hours before use

6. Best for Kids: Nostalgia 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker

Nostalgia ICMP400BLUE 4-Quart Electric Ice Cream Maker with Easy Carry Handle

$54.65
Amazon.com
as of October 29, 2024 11:42 am

If you like the idea of an old-fashioned ice cream maker and want to make large quantities, this fun machine fulfills both requirements. The Nostalgia ice cream maker uses ice and salt to freeze the ice cream, just like traditional ice cream makers, but the cranking mechanism is electric, so you don’t have to exert as much effort.

To obtain excellent ice cream, our home and laboratory testers discovered that the salt-and-ice layering must be precise, and the container’s interior must be flush with the bottom. A minimum of one 8-pound bag of ice and three cups of salt should be available. After assembly, the motor is activated, and a 30-minute timer is set. When finished, you will have up to 4 quarts of fluffy, smooth ice cream that can be eaten immediately or stored in the freezer. In testing, it performed excellently with mix-ins, but you must pause the machine and remove the motor and lid to add them, making the process more difficult than models with canister openings.

Identical to other salt-and-ice machines, our testers found this one extremely noisy when churning. You may also obtain a pail of slushy, salty water. For these reasons, it may be preferable to use it on the porch instead of in the kitchen.

The plastic ice bucket can be used for storage when not in use. The machine has a handle for portability, and when the power is turned off, the motor locks, ensuring that all components remain secure. However, a bucket filled with melted ice becomes heavy, so even though cleaning is simple, you must be careful when transporting the bucket to the sink, as it is easy to spill! The company also sells ice cream mixes that can be used with this machine if you desire simple ice cream. Additionally, you may use one of the included ice cream recipes or your own.

Key Features
  • This Unit makes 4 quarts of delicious ice cream, frozen yogurt or gelato
  • Pair with Nostalgia ice cream kits
  • With a plastic bucket that wipes away messes with ease
  • Store Leftover ice cream in the freezer, a see thru lid is included
  • A carrying handle attached to the bucket makes it to move around
  • Electric Motor does all the churning
  • The Electric motor locks into place
  • Recipes included in the manual
PROS
  • Electric cranking mechanism
  • Large capacity
  • Churns fluffy ice cream
CONS
  • Motor is loud
  • Less precise than a formulated freezer bowl

7. Best Splurge: Breville BCI600XL Smart Scoop Ice Cream Maker

Breville BCI600XL Smart Scoop Ice Cream Maker, Brushed Stainless Steel

$599.99
$499.95
Amazon.com
as of October 29, 2024 11:42 am

If you’re serious about making ice cream, this Breville ice cream maker has numerous advantages that justify its high price. The 1.1-quart ice cream maker has a compressor like a window air conditioner and freezes the ice cream as it spins. This eliminates the need for freezing and refreezing a bowl between batches. In addition, it has 12 calibrated settings for varying levels of softness, so you won’t end up with rock-hard sherbet, gelato, or soft-serve when you really want a scoop of vanilla that can hold its own in a root beer float.

A pre-cool setting prepares the machine for immediate operation, and internal thermometers maintain the ideal temperature. Our home tester particularly liked the “Softer to Harder” setting, which allows you to choose between softer ice cream and more complex sorbet. A disadvantage is that there is no slower churn setting for gelato.

This consistently produced fluffy ice cream in our laboratory tests. In addition to requiring minimal preparation, the lid is equipped with a finger loop for simple opening and closing. This made adding any ingredients incredibly easy, and they were evenly distributed. Even though this is a bulky compressor countertop machine, cleanup is straightforward. The bowl and paddle are detachable, and there are no crevices to clean.

This investment piece takes up a lot of space, so it may not be ideal for those with small kitchens, and at 30 pounds, it is the heaviest ice cream maker on the list due to the compressor.

Key Features
  • Note: Kindly review the videos under the image section and user manual under product details for set up and user guidance
  • 12 hardness settings; sorbet, frozen yogurt, gelato, and ice cream,Capacity 1.5 quart (1 Liter) bowl capacity

$275.92

This compressor-style countertop ice cream maker is more affordable than the Breville on our list. Due to the compressor, there is no need to pre-freeze the bowl, and it can produce up to 2 quarts of ice cream, so you are always prepared for a small ice cream party. This machine excelled in our laboratory tests with the vegan ice cream it produced. Some ice cream makers can’t handle fat substitutes as well as cream, but this Whynter model made vegan cookie dough ice cream with the ideal creamy texture.

It also produces traditional dairy ice cream in addition to frozen yogurt and sorbet. Our lab testers found it user-friendly and simple to set up, with excellent distribution of additives. The Extended Cooling function ensures that your creation will not melt immediately. In addition, our testers appreciated the included ice cream scoop, which made transferring the finished product to a cone a breeze.

The bowl insert is simple to clean by hand, and the corrosion-resistant stainless-steel exterior is sleek. Although it is a hefty machine, our testers had no trouble maneuvering it on the counter. One drawback is that it is loud. It wasn’t easy to lock the machine’s top latch into place.

9. KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker

KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Stand Mixer Attachment, 2 Quart, White

$99.99
$89.95
Amazon.com
as of October 29, 2024 11:42 am

If you already own a KitchenAid stand mixer and don’t want to purchase another kitchen appliance, this ice cream maker may be for you. This ice cream attachment is compatible with tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers. It consists of a freezer bowl like the Cuisinart model and a dasher that spins just like the paddle attachment.

Before using, the 2-quart bowl must be frozen for 24 hours to ensure that the ice cream freezes appropriately. You can store it there to ensure that it is always accessible, and if possible, keep it in the back, where temperatures are the coolest. Keep in mind that if your kitchen is warm, this bowl will quickly warm up and begin to sweat, so it’s a good idea to place a kitchen towel underneath to collect the drips.

A batch of ice cream should be churned for approximately 30 minutes. If you prefer a firmer texture that can be scooped, you should freeze the ice cream before serving, but soft-serve fans can enjoy it straight from the freezer bowl. A disadvantage of this model is that, unlike some dedicated machines, there is no automatic shutoff, so you will need to monitor it while churning.

The only inconsistency our product tester encountered while utilizing this attachment was when freezing various ice cream flavors. Her batch of vanilla ice cream was never wholly frozen, so it had to be placed in the freezer; two other flavors had a creamy, whipped, soft-serve consistency. Regardless, each batch was evenly blended and delicious. Even if freezing is complex, the mixture will eventually freeze and still taste good. Another benefit? It is quieter than the majority of standalone ice cream machines.

The drive assembly and dasher are dishwasher-safe, while the mixing bowl can be easily cleaned by hand.

Key Features
  • Make thick and creamy ice cream at home, in small batches, and enjoy right out the bowl.
  • Our 2 quart bowl lets you make your favorite ice creams, gelatos or sorbets in less than 30 minutes* *Excluding prep time.
  • Redesigned assembly and new handles easily connect to your KitchenAid Stand Mixer* to quickly start churning your favorite recipes. *Sold separately.
  • Redesigned dasher for thorough ingredient incorporation rotates inside the bowl to spread, scrape and mix for even freezing.
  • Once the bowl has reached room temperature, simply clean with warm, soapy water.
PROS
  • Simple and straightforward attachment
  • Produces creamy results
  • Quiet
CONS
  • Inconsistent freezing
  • No automatic shutoff

Best Ice Cream Maker – FAQs

There are many benefits of using an ice cream maker. Firstly, it is a great way to make sure that you always have homemade ice cream on hand. Secondly, it allows you to customize the recipe to your own taste. And finally, it results in a much creamier and smoother ice cream than if you were to make it by hand.

  • There are three main types of ice cream makers: manual, electric, and compressor. Manual ice cream makers are the least expensive and consist of a container that must be frozen before use.
  • Electric ice cream makers are more expensive but typically produce better results. They consist of a motor that powers the freezing element, which means that the container does not need to be frozen beforehand.
  • Compressor ice cream makers are the most expensive type and produce the best results. They consist of a compressor that does all the freezing work, meaning that the container does not need to be frozen beforehand.

Electric ice cream makers are the most popular type because they are easy to use, and they produce satisfactory results.

However, they can be quite expensive. Manual ice cream makers are cheaper than electric ice cream makers, but they can be more difficult to use, and the results may not be as good.

Frozen ice cream makers are the cheapest option, but they can be time-consuming, and the results may not be as smooth as with an electric or manual ice cream maker.

Each type of ice cream maker will come with its own instructions, but the basic process is the same for all machines. First, you need to assemble the machine and add the ingredients. Then, you need to set it to churn or freeze and wait for the ice cream to be ready. Finally, you need to remove it from the machine and enjoy!

The most common mistake people make when using an ice cream maker is not waiting long enough for the ice cream to freeze.

It is important to allow enough time for the ice cream to churn or freeze properly or it will not be as smooth and creamy as it should be.

Another common mistake is adding too much sugar or other sweeteners to the recipe, which can make the ice cream too sweet or icy.
