What Size Dutch Oven Should You Get For Camping?

When it comes to camping, there are a few essentials that you need to make your trip as enjoyable as possible. One of the most important items is a Dutch oven. But what size should you get?

If you are only going to be camping for a few days, then a small Dutch oven should do the trick. However, if you are planning on being gone for a while, then you will need a larger one. A 10-inch Dutch oven is perfect for most trips, but if you are going on an extended camping trip, you may want to consider getting a 12-inch or 14-inch model instead.

No matter what size Dutch oven you choose, make sure that it is made from cast iron. This will ensure that it is durable and will last for many years to come. With a little bit of care, your Dutch oven will be an essential part of your camping gear for years to come.

How To Choose The Best Dutch Oven For Camping

When it comes to camping, there are a few pieces of equipment that are essential – a tent, sleeping bag, and, of course, a Dutch oven. Dutch ovens are perfect for camping because they are sturdy and durable, and they can be used to cook all sorts of meals. But with so many different Dutch ovens on the market, how do you know which one is the best for you?

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a Dutch oven for camping:

Size

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a Dutch oven is size. You want to choose one that is big enough to cook your meals, but not too big or bulky that it is difficult to transport.

Weight

Another thing to consider is weight. You want a Dutch oven that is lightweight enough that you can easily carry it with you on your camping trips.

Material

Dutch ovens come in a variety of materials, including cast iron, aluminum, and enameled cast iron. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages.

For example, cast iron Dutch ovens are the most durable, but they are also the heaviest. Aluminum Dutch ovens are the lightest, but they are not as durable as cast iron models.

Enameled cast iron Dutch ovens are a good option because they combine the best of both worlds – they are durable and lightweight.

Temperature range

Some Dutch ovens are better suited for low-temperature cooking, while others can withstand higher temperatures. Choose the right one for your needs.

Price

Finally, you need to consider price when choosing a Dutch oven. They range in price from around $30 to $300, so it is important to find one that fits your budget.

Reviews

When you have narrowed down your choices to a few different models, it is a clever idea to read online reviews to see what others have to say about them. This can give you an innovative idea of which Dutch ovens are the best and which ones to avoid.

Now that you know more about Dutch ovens, it is time to choose the best one for your next camping trip! Consider the factors above to find an oven that will suit your needs and make sure to test it out before you head out on your adventure.

1. Best Overall: Camp Chef 12 Qt Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Camp Chef 12 Qt Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven

$99.99
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

The Camp Chef Dutch oven is ideal for those new to cooking with a Dutch oven and does not wish to invest in a more expensive model. You will still be able to prepare delicious camping food, and you will benefit from a lid lifter (to prevent burning yourself!) and a thermometer (to avoid burning the food!). In addition, you will receive a small starter booklet – what more could you need?

The lid of the Camp Chef Dutch Oven is flat and flanged to hold coals. The lid fits snugly and has a thermometer opening in the rim. The cover is also a skillet and a trivet. I prepared over-easy eggs and warmed tortillas on the lid.

The sides are 3 inches deep and straight, allowing more food to be cooked. The three feet kept it balanced and elevated over the hot coals. The oven arrived already seasoned, incredibly helpful, and performed exceptionally well from the very first use. The rustic-appearing wire handle was very convenient for use with a lid lifter.

I wished to evaluate the performance of this pot on various heat sources. I initially cooked this on a camp stove to make a simple taco soup. As expected with cast iron, the pot heated up slowly at first, but once hot, it retained heat. The soup soon began to boil and remained warm enough for campers to have seconds.

Cleaning the Camp Chef was a breeze. I quickly scrubbed it with hot water and a scrubber, dried it with a cloth, and then applied a thin layer of oil. The answer to whether I would spend more time cleaning after cooking was an emphatic no! Because this pan was pre-seasoned, cleanup was quick and straightforward.

About this item

2. Runner up: Lodge Cast Iron Camp Dutch Oven 6-Quart

Lodge Cast Iron Camp Dutch Oven, 6-Quart

$108.00
$76.37
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

A Lodge Dutch oven is the classic option when selecting a Dutch oven for camping. They are frequently regarded as the best cast-iron Dutch ovens on the market and are designed specifically for camping. This indicates that they have been tested for extreme temperatures and rougher environments.

This option is on the pricier side, but if you’re looking for a Dutch oven that will last a long time without costing too much initially, this is an excellent choice.

A distinguishing characteristic of the Lodge Dutch oven is that it is shallower than most. This makes it ideal for baking but more challenging for stews and roasts (unless you purchase a smaller roast or create a minor stew, of course!). The sturdy legs of this pot allow it to be placed on uneven surfaces, and the lid can be used as a griddle when inverted. I could see that being extremely useful at breakfast!

About this item
  • 6 Quarts
  • Seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil
  • Unparalleled heat retention and even heating
  • Use on the grill or over a campfire
  • Use to sear, sauté, bake, broil, braise, and fry
PROS

3. GSI Outdoors Aluminum Dutch Oven

GSI Outdoors 12-Inch Aluminum Dutch Oven (Silver, 5-Quart)

$99.95
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

This durable Dutch oven is perfect for all cowboys and river rats who still enjoy cooking over an open fire. Cast from durable, highly conductive aluminum, it heats up quickly and evenly without rusting, allowing it to go where cast iron cannot.

Eggs, biscuits, beef stew, and home-baked bread are just a few backcountry meals that can be prepared using a Dutch oven. Dutch ovens utilize radiant heat, so they function best with charcoal or coals underneath and on the lid.

The edge of the lid has a lip to hold coals in a ring. There is a requirement for traditional seasoning, but food will not stick after that, and the pot is easy to clean. The GSI Outdoors Dutch oven is available in two sizes, 10 and 12 inches, and each accommodates four to ten people. The 10-inch has no legs to support it over the coals, whereas the 12-inch has three fixed legs. Should you purchase both, they can be easily stored together.

About this item
  • Classic Dutch oven for versatile cooking over campfires, with charcoal or at home
  • Highly conductive aluminum construction for excellent heat distribution, durability, and performance
  • Cast aluminum is rust-free, easy-to-clean and weighs 66% less than cast iron
  • Comes in two sizes: 10-inch (2-quart) and 12-inch (5-quart)
  • Includes Dutch oven and lid; backed by a full manufacturer’s warranty
PROS
  • Super lightweight
CONS
  • Easier to burn food when cooking with aluminum vs cast iron
  • Expensive

4. Bruntmor Pre-Seasoned 2 In 1 Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Bruntmor Pre-Seasoned 2 In 1 Cast Iron Pan 5 Quart Double Dutch Oven Set and Domed 10 inch 1.6 Quart Skillet Lid, Open Fire Stovetop Camping Dutch Oven, Non-Stick

$54.99
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

Unlike most comparable products, the Bruntmor double Dutch oven lacks a knob on the lid; this is the trade-off for having a skillet lid. Both the lid and the pot are outfitted with two side handles. The set is priced for cast iron cookware by Bruntmor, but some families may find that 5 quarts are insufficient.

This product is one of the most popular in its category because the combination proved durable and versatile. It is made of heavy-duty cast iron without an enamel coating, allowing you to cook traditional versions of various dishes. That also means you’ll have to be extra careful when cleaning the oven after each use. The excellent pre-seasoning allows the oven to be used directly from the box.

The cast iron cover with a dome provides additional cooking space when used as a lid. You can prepare stews, beans, soups, and slow-cooked meat, among other dishes. The pre-seasoning prevents food from adhering to the pan’s bottom, making cooking and cleaning significantly more manageable. It functions on all types of cooking surfaces, including induction and campfires.

About this item
  • 5 Quarts
  • 2 in 1 Dutch Oven: The Bruntmor 5 quart preseasoned heavy duty 2 in 1 cast iron camping Dutch oven and casserole with a lid takes care of all your cooking needs, from soups to stews to baking or even roasting, frying, grilling, broiling, braising, and sauting meats, vegetables, and more!

5. Overmont Camp Dutch Oven Pre Seasoned Cast Iron Lid

Overmont Camp Dutch Oven Pre Seasoned Cast Iron Lid Also a Skillet Casserole Pot with Lid Lifter for Camping Cooking BBQ Baking 6QT(Pot+Lid)

$59.99
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

Overmont calls this dutch oven for camping the Lifetime Pot because it can easily last a lifetime. And, given that it is not even one of the most expensive items on the list, that is a fantastic bargain! This well-known brand of cast iron cookware features legs on both the pot and the lid to increase stability while cooking. You can also use the attached stainless-steel wire to hang the pot over the campfire.

The unit’s thick base ensures even heat distribution, which accelerates the cooking process. It has legs on both the lid and the oven, and the lid can be used as a skillet by flipping it over.

The lid is flat so that hot coals can be placed on it to maintain an even temperature throughout the oven. There are support feet on both the lid and the bottom of the pot. These provide added stability and the ability to convert the lid into a frying pan.

It distributes and retains heat evenly, making it ideal for deep-frying, searing, and baking. This pot provides excellent heat insulation and a tight seal, allowing even novice campers to roast a delicious chicken.

About this item

6. Best Budget: Ozark Trail 5-Quart Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Ozark Trail 5 quart Dutch Oven with Lid, Pre-Seasoned

$41.00
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

The Ozark Trail Cast Iron Dutch Oven is, by a wide margin, the most reasonably priced Dutch oven I tested. Although the spring handle made it difficult, but not impossible, to hang from a tripod, removing it from the hanger was more difficult than attaching it. Nonetheless, the spring handle proved helpful when I safely moved the Dutch oven by hand. The stainless-steel construction of the handle prevents rust and corrosion.

In the heat retention test, this model placed third. If you want to use a cast-iron Dutch oven for camping but don’t want to spend more than $30, there are few better options. Since it can be found in the camping section of Wal-Mart, you can find one close to home.

About this item

  • DELICIOUS- Pre-seasoning gives your food a unique & hearty flavor that you will come to expect

7. Best Manufacturer Seasoning: Lodge Deep Camp Dutch Oven, 8 Quart

Lodge Deep Camp Dutch Oven, 8 Quart

$88.89
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

American-made Lodge cast-iron cookware has been produced since 1896, so it is not surprising that the company has been in business for so long. The Lodge Deep Camp Dutch Oven is made from some of the most OK cast iron available on the market. The sheen from the factory seasoning stood out immediately, particularly compared to the others in my test. I was also pleased to observe that all interior and exterior surfaces were treated and seasoned uniformly.

The Lodge’s seasoning passed the searing test on a roast without sticking to the bottom with excellence. And it gave the roast a nice, crisp brown color on all sides. The Lodge Deep Camp Dutch Oven came in first place in this test by a wide margin. Despite its durable construction making it a bit heavy, the thick walls proved crucial in heat retention, making it the clear winner.

For their Deep Camp collection, Lodge offers sizes ranging from 2 quarts to 10 quarts to ensure that you can find the appropriate size for your needs. If you have an impromptu camping trip and do not have time to season your Lodge Deep Camp Dutch Oven, you can rest assured that it will suffice until you can season it properly.

About this item
  • 8 Quart
  • Seasoned with 100% natural vegetable oil
  • Unparalleled heat retention and even heating
  • Use on the grill or over a campfire
  • Use to sear, sauté, bake, broil, braise, and fry
PROS
  • High-quality factory seasoning

CONS
  • A little hefty
  • High price point

8. Texsport Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Texsport Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Legs, Lid, Dual Handles and Easy Lift Wire Handle , Black, 4 Quart

$37.19
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

If you’re on a budget, this 10″ D.O. is a better option than the Lodge variety. While not as well-known for cookware, Texsport’s camping cots are widely recognized.

This is one of the finest Dutch ovens for camping due to its affordable price and long-lasting durability. The pot’s three tiny legs allow it to stand upright in a campfire while providing sufficient distance for even heat distribution.

The Dutch oven has a tight-fitting lid that keeps food warm and a hanging bail with a center hook. This small Dutch oven with a capacity of 4 quarts weighs only 13 pounds (5.9 kilograms), making it lighter and more portable than larger models. This Dutch oven is ideal for a small family (2-3 people).

It is important to note that the Dutch oven comes with a thin waxy film that must be removed before seasoning. The film prevents the Dutch oven from rusting and can be easily removed by heating and wiping the pot.

Cast iron is already seasoned, so this method is a bit unusual. This pot seems to be all about saving money.

The exterior of the Dutch oven is rough. Surfaces of cast iron are typically rough, but this is excessively so. This pot is usable, but its price and quality are on the low end of the spectrum.

About this item
  • 4 Quart
  • Long lasting durability
  • Resistant to chipping and warping
  • Greater heat distribution and retention
  • Keeps food warm longer
  • Easy to clean surface
PROS
  • Super small Dutch oven suitable for solo or partner campers
  • High quality cast iron
  • Fairly lightweight.
CONS
  • Limited features.

9. King Kooker CI20S Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven

King Kooker CI20S Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Dutch Oven, 20-Quart

$181.16
Amazon.com
as of April 3, 2024 11:45 am

This sizeable Dutch oven made of cast iron is fit for a king and his entire court. This pot is ideal for preparing chili, stew, soup, or pot roast for a small army, as it is large enough to serve up to 20 people.

The lid fits well and can also be used as a large fry pan. Notably, this oven weighs approximately 30 pounds (13.6 kg) and becomes nearly impossible to carry by oneself when fully loaded. Nonetheless, I would expect this from such a large Dutch oven for camping.

Due to the instability of the coiling system, handling the steel handle is hazardous. Aside from that, this Dutch oven is a workhorse among the best size for group camping.

About this item
  • 20-quart pre-seasoned cast iron Dutch oven cookware with lid
  • Pre-seasoned, meaning it’s ready to cook with right away
  • Comes with cast iron lid that makes it easy to stew ad simmer your food
  • Holds up to 20 quarts of food or liquid
