What Exactly Are Pizza Pans?

Pizza pans are specific pans to cook homemade pizza. They can be cast iron, aluminum, stainless steel, or a combination of aluminum and steel: the more substantial, the better, especially if your dough is quite thick and your goal is to make a pizza in the Neapolitan style. If you want your pizza to be crunchy, choose a thinner crust, but keep an eye on it as it cooks because the bottom can burn quickly.

What form does a pizza pan take?

Typically, a pizza pan is round, allowing you to cook a round pizza identical to those served in restaurants. However, if you wish to bake a larger pizza and cut it into squares, you can also use rectangular pizza trays. We prefer the second option because we eat a lot of pizza and, if any remains, we freeze it for later consumption. Both options are excellent; be sure to bake your pizza with high-quality equipment.

What Are the Various Kinds of Pizza Pans?

There are approximately seven distinct types of pizza pans available. Although there are likely twice as many potential substitutes for pizza pans, let’s stick with the authentic pizza pans.

Seven types of pizza pans include:

  • Deep Dish Pizza Pans
  • Grill Pizza Pans
  • Perforated Pizza Pans
  • Cast Iron Pizza Pans
  • Pizza Stones
  • Regular Pizza Pans (that also come in a wide rimed variety)
  • Cutter Pizza Pans

There is MUCH more we could say about each of these pan types, but to move on to the best options as quickly as possible, we will move on to selecting a suitable pan and discussing the best options.

If you wish to learn more about each type of pizza pan, you can find additional information at the end of the article.

Factors To Consider When Choosing The Best Best Pizza Pan

You may have been baking pizzas for a long time, but if you believe you have not yet mastered the art of pizza-making, your pizza pan may not be of the highest quality. Before selecting a pizza pan, expert chefs consider a variety of characteristics. The surface, thickness, and material play a significant role in choosing the best pizza pan.

The proper bakeware is essential for baking delectable pizzas. If you frequently purchase from Amazon, you must have read the product reviews before purchasing, which can sometimes be deceptive. Your cooking preferences may differ from the person who gave the product five stars; what worked for him may not be the best option for you. When searching for the best pizza pans, the number of results returned can be overwhelming.

Diverse brands claiming to provide highly durable and high-quality products will only add to your confusion. Therefore, it is preferable to understand the various pizza pan types and seek out more specific products. With this guide to selecting the best pizza pan, you will be able to make a more informed decision about purchasing easy-to-clean, long-lasting pizza pans that produce a golden, crispy crust.

Non-Stick Pans

You must have heard the term nonstick numerous times; everyone prefers to bake and fry in a nonstick pan. Why is purchasing a nonstick pan even necessary? The answer is straightforward: you want the pizza to slide off the pan easily, making cleanup simple.

Though you may enjoy the cheesiest pizzas, the thought of cleaning all the cheese that has fallen onto the baking sheet may prevent you from loading it with cheese. This is precisely why you need a nonstick pan to remove the melted cheese from the pan easily. This essential characteristic makes a pizza pan suitable for your kitchenware collection.

Perforated Style Pizza Pans

A pizza pan with perforations is the best option for those who prefer their crust golden and crisp. You’ve probably seen those pans with holes in the bottom that directly allow heat to reach the crust. It reduces baking time and produces a golden crust.

It is crucial to consider the surface when selecting a pan, as it determines heat distribution. Like perforated pans but with larger holes, super-perforated pans are also available.

While solid pans with no holes or nicks on the surface are more commonly used, they typically take longer to bake a pizza. When pizza is baked on solid-surfaced pans, the crust is slightly doughy. If you prefer a crisp crust on your pizza, you can invest in a sturdy pan.

Raised bumps on nibbed pizza pans improve airflow underneath the pizza crust. These pans are also helpful for quickly achieving the perfect golden crust.

Material

As previously stated, the optimal material will depend on your preferred cooking method. Cast iron and carbon steel are the two most common pizza pan materials. Hard-coated tin-plated steel or ceramic or cordierite stone. Certain materials have greater versatility than others.

Although cast iron may be the most adaptable metal, aluminum and steel are the most common in restaurants. This is primarily due to their low maintenance needs and simple cleanup, but also to their adaptability.

Durability

Let’s be honest. You are not planning on baking a hundred pies per day and allowing your neighbors to slice them with meat cleavers and frisbee-throw the pans back to your residence.

However, you should still purchase a durable tool.

Pizza pans are subjected to extremely high temperatures, are frequently employed as cutting boards, and are likely to be washed multiple times (with some scrubbing to get off all the grease).

Get the most out of your pizza pan by investing in one that can withstand abuse. We recommend reading customer reviews to determine the durability of a product.

Conductivity

Conductivity refers to a substance’s capacity to absorb and retain heat. Typically, highly conductive pizza pans are the best option here.

However, stones are an exception because they should always be heated beforehand.

Like a metal pan with poor conductivity, a cold stone may result in a soggy or undercooked crust. Highly conductive pans will heat up rapidly in the oven, accelerating the cooking process and producing a deliciously crisp crust.

The Thickness of the Pan

If you know what type of pizza you intend to make, it is simple to determine the appropriate pan thickness.

You will need a thicker pan for a deep-dish because it will cook more slowly. A thinner pan will result in a quicker cooking time and a crispier crust.

A gauge measures the thickness of a pan.

With the larger numbers, 20-26 gauge, being the thinnest. While smaller gauges are thinner, 14-18 are thicker. For a doughier crust or when making a deep-dish pizza, you should use a 14–18-gauge pan.

Pans with Side Handles

There are pizza pans with side handles available. They facilitate the lifting of the pan. Large handles allow greater control when placing and removing a pan from the oven. The pan is easier to transport with a safe, secure grip, preventing accidents. Some pans have removable handles that can be attached when necessary.

1. Best Overall: Wilton Premium Non-Stick Bakeware

Wilton Perfect Results Premium Non-Stick Bakeware Pizza Pan for Oven, 14-Inch Steel Pan

$23.75
Amazon.com
as of March 18, 2024 6:11 pm

Homemade pizzas are baked in a round pizza pan. It is made of steel and is nonstick for quick release and cleanup. Wash in warm, soapy water before the initial use and after each use—a virtual device for making homemade pizzas with perfect roundness.

These are great pizza pans. We have now acquired two of these. We consume a lot of frozen pizza, so it’s convenient to have a clean one on hand if you wish to cook two at once. These pans are incredibly non-stick and lack a lip, allowing pizza to slide off the pan easily.

This was also one of the few pizzas pans I discovered on Amazon that lacked those holes. Why is this significant? If you’re like me and don’t want a super-crispy crust, you should avoid pans with holes because that’s precisely what they do.

It is nonstick and can withstand slicing with a rolling pizza wheel. So far, there have been no stains that cannot be removed. Typically, store-bought pizzas are baked on the oven rack, but this pan would still fit. I am pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it.

Key Features:
  • Non-Stick Coating
  • Oversized Handles
  • Durable Construction
  • Premium Bakeware

2. Top-Rated - Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Deep Dish Pizza Pan

Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Deep Dish Pizza Pan

$26.00
Amazon.com
as of March 18, 2024 6:11 pm

The pure aluminum construction of the Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Deep Dish Pizza Pan will allow your pizza to rise and bake evenly. Easy cleanup; wash by hand only. It is ideal for those who enjoy a soft crust and a generous amount of cheese on their dough.

Firstly, it’s enormous. Ideal for a family-sized deep-dish pizza or as a tray for individual thin-crust pizzas. Return to the Nordic Ware deep-dish pan once the dough has been prepared and rolled out with a rolling pin on your countertop and the oven has been preheated to 450 degrees.

Spread cornmeal on the surface that will be used for the dough. Place the pizza crust rolled out on top of the cornmeal in the Nordic Ware deep dish pan. Place in a preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes. Five minutes for items more minor than the pan’s diameter and 7 minutes for full size. Remove it and place a pizza paddle atop the Nordic Ware. Turn it over.

Because of the cornmeal, the pizza crust will prevent the dough from sticking to the Nordic Ware. Let it rest for one minute, then manually flip the pizza crust onto the pizza paddle. Add your desired toppings, etc., then return the pizza to the oven.

The tall edge prevents cheese and olive oil from leaking into the oven and causing a smoke-filled mess. After a brief soaking period, a good net scrubber will do the trick after requiring some elbow grease. I didn’t want a “nonstick” pan because it contains chemicals; raw aluminum is preferable. Another fantastic item from Nordic Ware!

Key Features
  • Natural aluminum commercial bakeware is made of pure aluminum which will never rust for a lifetime of durability
  • Baked goods rise and bake evenly due to aluminums superior heat conductivity and the reinforced encapsulated steel rim prevents warping
  • Easy clean up, hand wash only
  • Pan exterior dimensions 15 x 15 x 1.63 inches and interior dimensions 14 x 14 x 1.75 inches
  • Proudly made in the USA by Nordic Ware

3. Best Perforated Pizza Pan - LloydPans Pizza Quik Disk

LloydPans Quik-Disk, Pre-Seasoned PSTK, Perforated Pizza (1, 12 inch)

$15.97
Amazon.com
as of March 18, 2024 6:11 pm

If you want a thin, crispy crust but don’t want to use a stone, this LloydPans pre-seasoned 12-inch perforated pizza disk is the next best thing. This 18-gauge aluminum pizza pan has been hard anodized and pre-seasoned to be used right away.

This pizza pan has a hard coating that makes it durable, easy to clean, and effective at distributing heat. This is an excellent pizza pan for those who prefer a thin, crispy crust.

Effectively crisps the pizza and gives the dough structure. Pressing the dough onto the sheet will naturally go through the holes, making it more difficult to remove after cooking. I would recommend spreading the dough on another surface before transferring it to the baking sheet to reduce the likelihood of dough falling through the hole and sticking to the finished product.

Be sure to oil or spray the baking sheet with cooking spray. I also add cornmeal for assistance.

Like their pans, this item is durable, simple to clean, and reliable. It can be cleaned easily with a soapy sponge. It is not a pizza pan! If you want something substantial, you should purchase a pizza pan rather than a screen. Utilizing a screen to maximize oven temperature transfer to the bottom of the pizza dough, this one performs admirably.

On the downside, this pan isn’t great for grilling and may result in some spillage while baking. To prevent your oven from becoming overrun with grease or sauce, you can place another pan underneath it.

Key Features
  • Hard coat anodized 18-gauge (.040″) aluminum
  • No seasoning required and ready to go out of the box
  • Permanent finish will not chip, bake, flake, or peel off…ever. Durable: outlasts and outperforms pizza screens, Grip marks may be seen inside holes
  • Folded flat rim for added strength and easier removal with peels
  • 40% airflow to 60% surface ratio

The ProBake Set of Two Nonstick 16-Inch Pizza Pans is made in the United States without PFOA. Only hand wash and towel dry. The internal diameter measures 15.9 inches. External dimensions are a diameter of 16 inches.

This pan is lightweight; the pizza slides off easily and nicely browned the crust. I either make my dough in a bread machine or purchase it from a pizza parlor for a few dollars. For those who prefer a crispier crust, I poke holes in the dough with a fork and cook the crust for about 5 minutes before adding toppings and completing the cooking process.

I find that 460 degrees in the middle rack work best with pizza. Even if I am too lazy to precook the crust, the pan will cook it perfectly. I made the pizza pictured with jalapeno pepperoni and spicy chicken sausage from Sprouts; I highly recommend the spicy chicken sausage; it’s delicious! I also discovered an excellent pizza sauce recipe, which I will share.

The pizza pan has a 14-inch diameter and a 1-and-a-half-inch depth. Today, chain pan pizza is a joke. With this pan, I have revived the pizza pan from the 1980s. You need a ton of oil and 90 minutes of rising time in the pan to make it properly, followed by partial baking before adding toppings.

This pan has an excellent heat conductivity and an even cooking surface for high temperatures. Moreover, despite extensive use, our pan has not only remained scratch-free but is also very easy to clean.

Although dishwasher-safe, handwashing is recommended to prolong product life. Safe for use up to 450°F / 232°C in the oven; not intended for use under the broiler. I recently purchased a second one of this pan due to its high quality. I strongly suggest that you make your pizza.

7. Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Baker's Half Sheet

Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Baker’s Half Sheet, 2-Pack, Silver

$25.30
$21.99
Amazon.com
as of March 18, 2024 6:11 pm

Nordic Ware pioneered natural aluminum bakeware for the consumer market more than 15 years ago and now offers over 40 styles. The natural, durable aluminum construction browns and bakes evenly, while the light color prevents over-browning.

The oversized edge makes it easy to place and remove these pans from the oven. Nordic Ware’s products are proudly manufactured in the United States. Aluminum reacts with acidic substances like vinegar and tomato products. After prolonged use, these foods may darken, pit, or corrode the pan.

These two fits perfectly on the rack in the oven. They are easier to clean and store inside cabinets than a single large pan. It is incredibly well-made, and its dimensions are precise as described.

They are of high quality, heavy gauge, and DO NOT warp. I receive numerous requests for sugar cookies, and these baking sheets produce cookies with an ideal, flat surface for decorating. I conducted a small experiment where I baked half of my cookies on a Farberware sheet and the other half on a Nordicware sheet.

Same cookie dough, same silicone baking mat, same cookie size and thickness, and same baking temperature and time. What was that? The Nordicware cookies baked beautifully, while the Farberware cookies had nearly burnt edges and bottoms and an uneven bake.

I also appreciate the high sides because I can use plastic wrap to keep my cookies soft and fresh while decorating. Also, if the desire for a jelly roll or a Swiss roll cake ever arises, these sheets will work well.

These sheets are spectacular. I will keep classic baking sheets for the rest of my life, in contrast to the Teflon ones that scratch, rust, and release their toxic coating into the food. These sheets are simple to clean and stylish as well.

Key Features
  • Naturals commercial bakeware is made of pure aluminum which will never rust for a lifetime of durability. For sweet or savory baking; from cookies to sheet pan dinners, this is the pan you’ll reach for
  • Foods bake and brown evenly due to aluminum’s superior heat conductivity. Reinforced encapsulated steel rim prevents warping and adds strength
  • Compatible with parchment paper or silicone baking mats if desired. Easy clean up; hand wash recommended
  • Pan exterior dimensions 17.88 x 12.88 x 1.06 inches and interior dimensions 16.5 x 11.38 x 1 inches
  • Proudly made in the USA by Nordic Ware

Desire to bake like a pro from the comfort of your own home? Our Jelly Roll Pan is ideal for making jelly rolls, cookies, and roasting vegetables, among other things. The pan is premium, heavy gauge, recyclable aluminum with reinforced handle areas.

It features our original pebble pattern, allowing airflow under baked goods for more even browning and easy release! This uncoated bakeware’s unique, natural non-stick properties ensure consistent, dependable, and healthy results every time.

Since we bake our pastries, buns, and rolls, it is only natural to choose a pan that facilitates baking. I also used it as a cookie pan, and it didn’t even need parchment! I put the cookie right on top to bake, and it didn’t stick – so that’s a plus.

To maintain the appearance of bakeware, a quick wash with hot water and a sponge usually suffices to clean these pans. For baked-on residue, a plastic scrubber will remove it without difficulty.

I initially purchased this pan for myself a decade ago. I adore it because it does not scorch food and retains its sheen. Other pans include oil and have turned black and charred food over time. I would strongly endorse this product.

Key Features
  • Commercial Grade 18 Gauge Aluminum
  • Patented Pebble Pattern
  • More Durable And Rust Resistant
  • Hand Wash Promptly In Hot Soapy Water

9. Bellemain Heavy Duty Aluminum Half Sheet Pan

Bellemain Heavy Duty Aluminum Half Sheet Pan, 18″ x 13″ x 1″

$24.99
Amazon.com

This chef-grade aluminum baking pan will be your trusted baking companion for years to come, regulating and maintaining temperatures.

Regardless of what you’re cooking or baking, this durable pan can withstand the heat. Turn the oven on high and place your pan inside to bake, oven-fry, or roast. A deep rim keeps drips and cooking liquids contained for a clean range.

The bacon was prepared in the oven. It is not non-stick. I line the racks with parchment paper before placing them in the oven. The paper absorbs the oil, facilitating subsequent cleanup. I have not experienced any warping, and the oven temperature was 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

I now bake cookies frequently. I roast more vegetables because I don’t need three or four cookie sheets to feed my family. This sheet is among the best purchases I’ve ever made. I use silpats because they are easy to clean, have not warped, and still look as good as they did when they arrived, but most importantly, they cook food evenly.

This is not a flimsy, inexpensive kitchen toy. The Bellemain half pan is constructed from heavy-duty, thick-gauge aluminum and will endure use after use. Use it for any food, including bacon and baked goods.

It was made from rust-resistant, mirror-smooth aluminum; this pan is surprisingly easy to clean. No steel wool is required; run under hot water with a nylon brush or sponge and soap. Dry thoroughly, then store.

I appreciate the cookie sheet. I expected something thin because of the price, but the thick metal prevented my cookies from burning on the bottom during baking. It is an ideal size for single-serving meals. It’s also great for baking quesadillas.

The nonstick coating has performed admirably, the pan is simple to clean, and according to the sticker, it comes with a lifetime warranty, which is impressive for a cheap pan! Seasoning the Pan

If you have a pizza pan that you purchased after extensive research and it fails to produce the desired results, it may not be adequately seasoned. To maintain the pristine condition of your pans, it is necessary to season them regularly. Before placing your pizza on the pan, wash it by hand with warm soapy water.

Dry the pan and then warm it in an oven that has been preheated. After being heated, you can remove it from the oven and apply a thin layer of oil to both sides. After oiling the pan, please return it to the oven for 15 minutes. The pan can then be removed, and excess oil wiped away with a clean cloth.

You do not need to wash your pan after seasoning it, as the slippery surface is necessary to prevent the crust from sticking to the pan. This may be a lengthy procedure, but it will result in flavorful pizzas every time you bake. Typically, pans come with instructions for seasoning, and it is best to follow them step by step.

Cleaning it up

While the pan’s seasoning is a crucial consideration when deciding which one to purchase, do not overlook that cleaning can be laborious. Even though many brands of pizza pans claim to be dishwasher-safe, it is always recommended to wash the pan by hand with warm, soapy water. Some pans are challenging to clean, especially when melted cheese has adhered to them.

For washing the pan, aluminum-specific detergents are recommended as over-acidic cleaning agents. These detergents may cause damage to the cookware and shorten its lifespan. It is recommended to use a soft sponge to avoid leaving scratch marks on the pan.

Pizza Pan: Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to the guidelines for selecting the best pizza pans, I also include my concise responses to frequently asked questions. This section may also help you resolve your problems.

With a pan, the size and shape are determined by the pan. The crust must cook quickly and thoroughly to prevent soggy, soft pizza crusts. Using our preferred pizza dough mixes, you can make delicious pizza crusts. This is especially important for pizzas with thick crusts or heavy toppings.

From a “which metal” standpoint, two options are available: steel and aluminum pans. These metals dominate the production of pizza pans for three simple reasons: Both aluminum and steel pizza pans conduct heat well. They are capable of fabrication

To avoid ruining the experience, ensure that your pizza tray is greased. Even if the surface is nonstick, you must still grease it. Whether you use oil, butter, cornmeal, or a combination of the three, it will prevent your pizza from sticking and add flavor and texture.

It depends on the type of cookware selected. In the absence of low-maintenance pans, pizza-making at home would be a nightmare. Remember that pizza pans and trays cannot be cleaned in the dishwasher, as they will lose their properties and cause the dough to stick to the bottom.

Many individuals believe that a perforated pan promotes airflow so that dough can cook evenly. This may be true to a certain extent, but you don’t need a pan with holes to cook pizza like an Italian. Since this type of pizza tray does not exist in Italy and is not used, it is up to you whether you want to give them a try: we have no experience with pizza pans with holes, so we cannot recommend their use.

Yes, you can. Therefore, we have also listed the best baking trays and cookie sheets for cooking pizza. You’ll get a giant pizza, a bit crispier, and to be cut into squares.

No, we do not recommend greasing your pizza tray; sprinkle some flour on the bottom of your pan to prevent the dough from sticking.

Preheating or preparing your preferred cookware is essential for a perfect crust with a gloriously crispy bottom. Using a pizza stone should be heated for at least 20 minutes in a hot oven.

A pizza stone speeds up adequately cooking pizza. Because the dough is placed on a hot pizza stone, there is no delay in the cooking process when using a pizza stone. In addition, if you are not an expert, your pizza may quickly burn due to everything happening more rapidly. With a pan or tray, you will experience a delay, but this will not compromise the quality of your pizza if your dough is well-prepared, and you keep checking the oven (without opening it). With a baking sheet or pan, pizza rarely burns!

There could be several reasons why your pizza is soggy, but the most common is that it was not cooked in a hot enough oven. The second possible cause is your pan: if you put too much dough in a pan, your pizza won’t have enough room to rise, and it will begin to release moisture, making it soggy.

No, you cannot do that. You will not be able to roll out the pizza correctly, leading to cooking and sealing issues. You will lose your pizza through the gaps.

These pizza pans lack holes or ridges and are the most common type. This causes the heat to transfer through the solid pan more slowly, resulting in a doughy crust. The surface of a pizza pan with nibs is covered with small bumps.

Holes in pizza pans allow more air to circulate and distribute heat evenly to expedite the cooking process while preventing the pizza from absorbing excess moisture. As a result, the pizza is cooked correctly, is less sweet, and is low in calories.

Conclusion

Pizza baking is not as tricky as it may appear; all you need is a perfect recipe and the proper pan. Many brands assert that their product is the most durable and will produce excellent results; however, you should also consider the pan’s material and maintenance before purchasing.
