The global popularity of takeout and delivery pizza cannot be overstated, as countless individuals include these cheesy, saucy pies in their regular meal plans. However, many pizza enthusiasts prefer to make their own at home. They have complete control over the ingredients, sauce-to-cheese-to-toppings ratio, and overall quality of this beloved food.

Creating your pizza requires little in the way of specialized equipment. In addition to a calibrated oven or grill, all you need is a high-quality pizza stone to ensure even heat distribution and your desired char level. We recommend Lodge’s Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Baking Pan; the cast-iron guarantees that the pie cooks evenly every time.

However, pizza stones can also bake bread and other baked goods, and some can even serve as a griddle.

These pizza stones are the best in their category, and we’ve highlighted what makes each one worthwhile.

What Are Pizza Stones?

As baking pizza necessitates specific temperature conditions to bring out the optimal flavor of the delicacy, it also necessitates a suitable bottom surface for the crust to come out crisp. Typically, woodfire ovens achieve the desired conditions, but this method is costly. This is where pizza stones come in as an inexpensive alternative to achieve the same results.

A pizza stone for the oven has a slab-like ceramic or stone structure. Bakers use it as a pizza baking tray because it retains heat more effectively than metal. Obviously, the thicker the stone, the more dependable it will be for your culinary endeavors. However, remember that even the densest stones can crack if misused.

The Advantages of Utilizing Pizza Stones

We’ve established that a pizza stone is essential for making the perfect pizza. However, what is its function, and how can it benefit you? Take a look:

Crispier crust

First and foremost, a pizza stone guarantees that your pizza will have a crispy crust. Since the stone retains heat, it provides an ideal surface for evenly cooking the dough. In addition, the stone’s fissures and pores allow moisture to escape, thereby removing the sogginess from the crust. A metal tray cannot achieve the same results because it does not allow all the water to escape.

No stickiness

Since the pizza stone’s surface is naturally non-stick, it provides an effortless baking experience with minimal cleanup. A simple brush would suffice to remove crumbs from the tray so that you won’t worry about it. Remember never to place the pizza stone in the dishwasher or wash it directly, as it will compromise its durability.

Simple to operate and maintain

Using a pizza stone is so straightforward that even novices can jot down the steps on their refrigerators. Place the slab in the preheated oven. Then, place a frozen pizza on top and wait for a delicious meal. Leave the pizza stone inside the range to cool after the pizza has been cooked. You can clean it with a brush and store it in the oven for convenience. If you are not comfortable wiping the stone with a brush alone, you can also use a slightly damp cloth.

Less expensive alternative to wood-burning pizza ovens

Every chef’s dream is to own a firewood pizza oven that provides the classic texture of this delicious and admirable Italian cuisine. However, purchasing and operating these appliances is prohibitively costly. Fortunately, pizza stones replicate the results of cooking over a wood fire at a fraction of the cost.

  1. No preparation is required.

Although it is a common misconception to grease the baking sheet with oil, butter, etc., before placing the pizza on it, it is not necessary to do so when using pizza stones. Using seasoning or oil, the stone can absorb these substances and become less porous.

If you are in the market for cast iron, you cannot do better than Lodge products. This brand has been producing cast iron cookware since the late 19th century, and its skillets and pans are so durable that they are frequently passed down through the generations.

Cast iron excels at heat retention, and a preheated pan will ensure a crisp crust without inconvenient burnt spots. Hence, it stands to reason that a cast iron baking pan would perform admirably in the delicate art of pizza-making. This 14-inch baking dish can accommodate even a large or irregularly shaped homemade pie. The cast iron allows the top and interior of the pizza to cook evenly and removes moisture from the dough, leaving a beautifully charred and crisp crust.

The pan arrives pre-seasoned with vegetable oil, allowing you to immediately begin work on your pizza project. Additionally, this pizza stone has loop handles on both sides, allowing you to slide the pizza in and out of the oven without risking a burn.

as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

Cuisinart Alfrescamoré Pizza Grilling Stone is ideal for parties where various pizzas are being prepared. When the pizza stone is heated to a high temperature, it cooks pizza quicker, so there are no lengthy waits.

Cordierite is a complex, stone-like material that does not crack in extreme heat or cold and is more resistant to thermal shock than ceramic. The beauty of the stone is that it consistently bakes golden pizza crusts. The pizza is cooked evenly and from the bottom up. The secret is to preheat the pizza stone for 15 minutes before placing a fresh pizza.

We have used this pizza stone on various gas/pellet grills for the past few months! After experiencing its positive effects, we have been recommending it to everyone.

It has withstood direct heat of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit and performed flawlessly with its current configuration. It does acquire char marks from the flour/dough, but these are mere “seasoning.” We clean it with a grill brush (NEVER WATER!!), and it’s ready for the next cookout.

Key Features
  • 13″ Diameter
  • Cordierite Stone Composition
  • Perfect For Any Baked Good
  • Perfect For Any Grill
  • Eats Up Quickly And Cooks Evenly

3. Best High-End: All-Clad 00280 Stainless Steel Serving Tray with 13-inch Pizza-Baker Stone

All-Clad 00280 Stainless Steel Serving Tray with 13-inch Pizza-Baker Stone Insert and Pizza Cutter, Silver

$149.99

as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

This attractive and ingeniously designed pizza stone is no exception All-Clad’s cookware is held in high regard by enthusiastic home cooks and professional chefs.

This two-piece set includes a natural soapstone pizza stone measuring 13 inches and a stainless-steel carrying tray. The pizza stone distributes heat evenly and thoroughly, leaving the crust with an enviable crispness. The stainless-steel tray with two handles makes it easy to transport the pizza stone and pizza to the table.

If you’d rather not struggle with a knife and serving spatula when you’re ready to dig into your pie, you’ll appreciate the All-Clad pizza cutter.

This is an attractive stone. The image depicts the stone before it has been coated with oil, which causes the color to become very dark and marbled with intricate patterns.

Using this stone in the oven with the ring will be very easy to place in and remove from the oven, which is my preferred method. The steel ring will acquire a bronzed appearance due to the oil used to season the stone. It’s more important that it’s easy to place and remove from the oven.

If you cut the pizza directly on the stone, the stone will undoubtedly acquire cutting marks. Again, I have no problem with this, but some individuals have been dissatisfied with how easily the stone scratches. Soapstone is relatively soft, so remove the pizza and cut it on a different surface or don’t worry about it. My preference is to cut and leave the pizza on the pizza stone because the stone keeps the pizza hot.

Before using the stone for the first time, it must be rubbed with vegetable oil and baked at 350 degrees for several hours. I used avocado oil because it is heat resistant. This is an excellent pizza-baking stone! You can achieve a very high temperature, and preheating it effectively simulates a brick oven.

Key Features
  • Pizza stone is made from porous soapstone that wicks away moisture; serving tray and cutter are made from durable stainless steel
  • Secured with riveted stainless-steel handles and to prevent dropping or spilling
  • The go-to cookware brand for professional chefs and avid home cooks alike
  • Safe to use in an oven or broiler (up to 600°F) and a dishwasher

$69.95

as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

Grilled pizzas are currently more popular than ever. They are simple to prepare on a gas or charcoal grill, and their charred crusts and perfectly melted cheese are aesthetically pleasing.

If you’re eager to experiment with grilled pizzas, you’ll need a pizza stone explicitly designed for this cooking method, such as the Emile Henry Flame Top Pizza Stone. This ceramic pan can withstand temperatures up to 900 degrees and is ideal for grilling due to its sturdy construction and scratch-resistant coating. This is available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes to accommodate large and extra-large pizzas.

This oven-safe, dishwasher-safe stone can also be used to bake pizzas, but its grilling capabilities should not be overlooked.

This pizza stone is worth every penny. It absorbs heat during preheating for a well-baked crust and retains heat after baking to allow pizza to cool quickly while keeping the crust crisp. Nothing is worse than a soggy, unevenly baked crust.

I prefer making my dough because it will enable me to create a crust style that complements the pizza I intend to bake and enjoy. An actual test was baking a simple Neapolitan pizza, which required the crust to complete the toppings of tomato, olive oil, and fontina cheese.

Key Features
  • Designed for use on gas, charcoal and natural wood grills up to 930°F
  • Superior heat retention. Burgundy Clay has superior even-heat diffusion and heat retention properties; it keeps food hot on the table longer.
  • Incredibly durable cookware that resists chipping or scratches. Cut directly on the glazed pizza stone and serve
  • Handles make it easy to use and carry
  • Dishwasher safe. Microwave safe. Oven safe to 500°F

With the Kamado Joe Pizza Stone, you can bake authentic, wood-fired, pizzeria-quality pizzas on your Kamado Joe grill. This high-impact ceramic stone evenly distributes heat and absorbs excess moisture to cook the pizza to perfection with a crisp crust. When caring for your pizza stone, there are only a few things to keep in mind.

Utilization will cause your Pizza Stone to darken, which is normal. Your Pizza Stone is now operational. It should not be seasoned with olive oil or other oils. The Kamado Joe Heat Deflector must be used with the Pizza Stone to avoid burning the pizza.

This stone perfectly fits and functions in the Joe Jr. It produces beautiful pizzas with a crisp crust in approximately 10 minutes. The bottom crust became overly charred the first couple of times I used it at a high temperature (525). I adjusted the temperature to 450 degrees and cooked the pizza for nine minutes, resulting in a perfectly crisp pizza. I use parchment paper to make things simpler to clean and remove without the need for cornmeal.

Since we’ve been making our pizza for years, we’ve gradually improved our technique. Before we acquired our Kamado Joe grill, we used a pizza stone and a combination of baking and broiling in the oven. The Kamado Joe pizza stone baked our pizza to perfection. The bottom crust was crisp and chewy in the middle and perfectly melted the cheese. Now we can make our pizza in a wood-fired oven!

Key Features
  • Bake authentic, wood-fired, pizzeria-quality pizzas
  • High-impact ceramic stone distributes heat and absorbs excess moisture for a perfectly cooked pizza with a crispy crust.
  • The Kamado Joe Heat Deflector must be used with the Pizza Stone to avoid burning the pizza.

6. Best Budget: American Metalcraft 15" Round Economy Pizza Stone

American Metalcraft 15″ Round Economy Pizza Stone

$19.89
Amazon.com
as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

A few days after its arrival, I used this for pizza. This works effectively. The dimensions are accurate to the millimeter. My oven is very narrow, so I had an extra 1/8 inch. I was concerned that it might be excessively large, but it is not.

If you have a similar issue and believe the advertised diameter may be slightly smaller, you will be mistaken. Frequently, dimensions are not accurately described for kitchen items. This is it. Despite this, it is NOT indestructible. This should be handled with the same care as fine China.

This stone was utilized at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. I have only used this once thus far. It remains to be seen how durable this item will be over time, as I cannot estimate its utility. Overall, I am satisfied, and the price is reasonable.

This pizza stone is a game-changer for me, as it allows the crust of frozen pizza purchased from the store to rise higher and become crispier. Use and care instructions were printed on an enclosed sheet. The pizza stone and oven were preheated with no problems before use.

The porous stone has developed a slight discoloration, but it does not affect its functionality or effectiveness. Use a brush and a soft sponge to clean it. I refrain from using soap so that it does not permeate the stone and resurface when heated. Overall, a fantastic kitchen aid, especially for those who struggle with cooking.

Key Features
  • Economy pizza stone
  • Made of ceramic stone material
  • Baking stones are distributed heat much more efficiently and evenly than metal
  • Available in round shape
  • Measures 15-inch size

8. Honey-Can-Do Old Stone Oven Rectangular Pizza Stone

Honey-Can-Do Old Stone Oven Rectangular Pizza Stone

$43.99
$36.50
Amazon.com
as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

This rectangular pizza stone is designed to evenly distribute heat and produce a pepperoni pie without a soggy center, allowing you to make the pie of your dreams. This pizza stone is cordierite and can withstand temperatures up to 1400 degrees. Handwashing makes maintenance simple, but it also allows the stone to age over time. And do not limit yourself to homemade or frozen pizzas. This stone can be utilized to evenly cook bread, pastries, and even vegetables.

It does not produce smoke or odor and does not affect the sliding of a pizza using a wooden peel.

Using a Fluke Temperature Meter, it was determined that the heating is uniform as it should be for a single-piece stone.

There have been no complaints over the years, and despite rough handling, it continues to perform year after year.

I have also used fire brick as a pizza surface, and while I like them, they are not perfectly flat and sometimes tear the raw pizza dough (60-70 percent hydration) because they are pieced together. I sometimes use fire bricks to form a pizza oven, but I find that using the broiler for a few minutes at the end of the cooking cycle gives the crust a nice, charred appearance.

It’s been in my possession for several weeks, and I’ve used it numerous times for bread and pizza. This was the final ingredient I needed to make a homemade pizza that I was pleased with. Before this, I had been baking on a metal baking sheet and was always dissatisfied with the crust. Not any longer! The item is weighty and well-constructed. I anticipate many years of service from it.

Key Features
  • Makes restaurant quality pizzas, bread, pastries and vegetables
  • Absorbs oven heat and transfers it evenly
  • Withstands heat up to 1400-degrees
  • Specially engineered Heat Core eliminates soggy centers

9. NerdChef Steel Stone - High Performance Pizza Baking

NerdChef Steel Stone – High Performance Pizza Baking | Made in USA (14.5″ x 16″) – (.375″ Thick – Pro)

$129.95
Amazon.com
as of April 9, 2024 9:25 pm

This pizza stone is made of solid steel, which makes it extremely heavy and retains much more heat than ceramic. This is fantastic if you’re looking for seriously blistered and crackly pizza crusts, but we caution against using it for other purposes.

I consider the quality to be more than adequate; it will perform as well as any other steel of the same thickness, regardless of price. The only improvement that would necessitate a price increase would be to round off all the exterior profile edges.

The edges are not as sharp as a knife, but since this is a relatively heavy piece of metal, it can cause severe damage if dropped or struck against something. Whether the edges are rounded or sharp, it is best to handle them with extreme caution.

For most physically fit men and women, the weight should not be a problem. Since the open oven door necessitates stooping and reaching to place the item in the oven, the importance becomes somewhat awkward. If you have access to assistance and doubt your capability, two people should be sufficient to complete the task.

If you want to make pizzas with puffed crusts that are thin and crispy on the outside and soft and chewy inside in your home oven, you must use either baking steel or a traditional pizza/baking stone. In some respects, steel is superior to stones, whereas, in other respects, stones are as good or better.

Key Features
  • 20x higher conductivity than ceramic baking stones and twice the heat capacity. This lets it send much more heat energy to your crust so you can get the great performance of a 1000F oven in a home oven at 450F.
  • Gorgeous crusts, better blistering, and faster cook times.
  • Low-friction surface: textured, sanded smooth, seasoned with flaxseed oil.
  • Solid steel, unbreakable, guaranteed for life.
  • 16″ x 14.25″ x .375″ – 23lbs (Warning: It’s heavy!) Made in USA.

10. Best Set - Ovente Ceramic Flat 13 Inch Pizza Stone Set

With a crisp crust on the outside and tender on the inside, a layer of melted cheese, and perfectly browned meat toppings, pizzas are the ultimate comfort food for everyone. Our inner pizza gluttons have a go-to spot whenever our taste buds crave a mouthwatering slice. Fortunately, it is not always necessary to order pizza delivery from the nearest pizzeria. With the ceramic pizza stone from Ovente, all you need is dough, cheese, and toppings to make brick oven-style pizzas at home!

The Ovente pizza stone heats up rapidly, absorbs heat efficiently, and maintains its temperature for an extended period. It is designed to withstand extreme thermal shocks and retain its form, shape, and efficacy even when exposed to extremely high temperatures daily.

Compared to other larger alternatives, this 13-inch pizza stone is much more manageable. It could be moved without difficulty from the oven to the countertop. Additionally, you can use it for baking bread and other treats and pizza!

Unlike other pizza stones that require conditioning, this one requires minimal maintenance. There is no need for seasoning. It is only necessary to preheat the oven and place the pizza on the stone. Allow it to COOL, and then rinse it with warm water.

The pizza stone matched its description. The handles made it simple to enter and exit the oven. The pizza cutter is on the small side but otherwise adequate.

Previously, we used metal trays to bake pizza, which frequently resulted in burnt and undercooked spots. When we take the pizza outside, it quickly becomes cold. This stone exponentially improved our pizza experience.

With the pizza on the stone, it was evenly baked, tastier, and softer, and it stayed warm for a long time. This is also used for baking pies, baguettes, etc. It is very high quality, feels like it could last forever, and is simple to clean. If you don’t already have one, this is a kitchen essential.

Key Features
  • Superior Heat Retention & Shock Resistance
  • Comes with FREE pizza cutter wheel -Metal handles
  • Compatible with conventional or microwave ovens
  • For baking, bread, biscuits, tortillas, bagels, cookies & rolls
  • For heating & reheating pizzas and other baked goods

Factors To Consider When Choosing The Best Pizza Stones

Materials

Pizza stones are mainly cast iron, cordierite stone, steel, soapstone, or ceramic. The material is the key to a crisp crust and quick baking time. You want a heat-conductive pizza stone, meaning that it heats quickly and uniformly.

Stainless steel is likely the best conductor of heat compared to the other materials, and it also requires less maintenance. However, it may be costly. Regular steel is a more affordable option, but it is susceptible to rust. “The mass of the steel makes your oven more efficient by improving heat retention,” says Kent. “It is preferable to have a durable cooking tool in your arsenal because baking stones occasionally crack. Additionally, baking steels are ideal for baking pies with a crisp bottom crust.”

Commonly used cast iron is susceptible to rust, but it conducts heat well and heats up nicely. Ceramic and clay pizza stones are among the most widely used materials for pizza stones; they are excellent at transferring heat and absorbing moisture from the pizza crust but can crack over time. Cordierite stone is like ceramic and clay, but it is more durable and more likely to last longer.

Size

In addition to physical dimensions, the thickness of your pizza stone is also necessary. These baking stones can be quite extensive; therefore, you should double-check that the stone you select will fit in your oven. The thickness of the stone will also affect its performance in terms of heat retention. Consider that the larger the stone, the heavier it will be; there is no point in purchasing a baking stone that is so cumbersome that you never use it.

Shape

Stones for pizza are either rectangular or circular. We believe that rectangular stones are superior because they offer a larger surface area and greater versatility.

Seasoning

Most pizza stones do not require seasoning when first purchased. There is a high likelihood that they have been pre-seasoned by the manufacturer to prevent sticking if they are made of cast iron. Seasoning a pizza stone on your own can result in smoke or an unpleasant odor. Before using a pizza stone for the first time, follow any instructions included with the product.

However, some pizza stones can be re-seasoned. Typically, this entails cleaning the pizza stone, coating it with a thin layer of oil, and baking for one hour. Always consult the manual for detailed instructions.

Cleaning

It is not possible to clean a pizza stone in the dishwasher. Because of their nature and weight, you must wash them by hand. Never use soap or harsh cleaning products. Instead, use an abrasive brick or a stiff nylon brush to clean the pizza stone. If a steel stone gets wet, dry it immediately to prevent rust. Avoid submerging the stone in water, as it may take a considerable time to dry.

Clay, cordierite, and ceramic should never contact soap or detergents, as the stone may absorb them and then transfer them to food. If food becomes adhered to the pizza stone, rinse it with water and use a nylon scrubber to remove any remaining food particles.

Best Pizza Stones For Crispy Crusts - FAQs

In addition to the guidelines for selecting the best pizza stone, I also include my concise responses to frequently asked questions. This section may also help you resolve your problems.

Typically, manufacturers create durable and inexpensive pizza stones from clay. The fine-grained soil mixed with water is a fantastic surface that retains its form at higher temperatures and has delicate pores to be effective. There are numerous other options for ceramics, but clay is the most affordable and widespread. Learn here how to use a pizza stone.

Before placing the pizza on the stone to cook, you should preheat it for optimal results and prevent it from cracking. Place the pizza stone in a cold oven before preheating to the desired temperature. When the oven is preheated, the stone is also heated. Cook the pizza on a stone that has been preheated until the crust is crisp.

You can always leave a pizza stone in your oven for storage. This can also improve the oven’s recovery time and a more uniform temperature. The reasoning is that the stone “captures” heat and helps to maintain the oven’s temperature when the door is opened. It will add a few minutes to the oven’s preheating time, and the baking stone should be removed when baking pastries that are prone to burning.

Pizza stones aren’t just for pizzas. You can use them to roast vegetables, bake cookies, reheat frozen foods, and sear meat, among other things. Some steels can also be used as a griddle on the stove. Then, you can prepare everything from bacon and eggs to pressed sandwiches.

If you desire a rectangular stone, please purchase a baking stone or steel of the appropriate size for your oven. Both ovens and stones vary in size, but a 30-inch range should accommodate a 15-by-20-inch stone. Just ensure a 1-inch space between the stone and the oven walls on all sides, as this is essential for airflow.

Ceramic and clay pizza stones are among the most used materials for pizza stones; they are excellent at transferring heat and absorbing moisture from the pizza crust but can crack over time. Cordierite stone is like ceramic and clay, but it is more durable and more likely to last longer.

Composite and cordierite stones are typically more durable and expensive than ceramic ones. Baking steels are made of steel, which can be heavier than stone at the same price range depending on thickness and brand. Some pizza stones require seasoning before use.

Not only do pizza stones come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but they are also made of various materials. Ceramic pizza stones are perhaps the least expensive option when purchasing a pizza stone.

A thick pizza stone retains heat more effectively than a thin one. Moreover, it has improved heat distribution. This creates crisper, more evenly baked pizza than a light pizza stone.

You will notice that some pizza stones are sold as “glazed” and others as “unglazed” when purchasing one. Despite their similarity, the glazed pizza stones are easier to clean. Both heat and absorb moisture equally well, so the purchase decision is entirely based on personal preference.

These are part of the natural seasoning of the stone and will not harm it or alter the flavor of food. Carefully handle the stone to prevent chipping or breaking. The maximum temperature for the Deluxe Pizza Stone is 600 degrees Celsius (1,112 degrees Fahrenheit). The Economic Pizza Stone’s maximum temperature is 300 degrees Celsius or 572 degrees Fahrenheit.

Conclusion

Pizza stones are constructed from natural materials and are not intended to be aesthetically pleasing. Instead, they have porous surfaces that appear rough but perform their duties admirably and produce crisp results. Be wary of products with aluminum coatings or glossy constructions misrepresented as stone.

Some pizza stones have attached legs that provide stability when placing or removing them from the oven. Overall, the success of your purchase will largely depend on your ability to identify the product that best meets your specific requirements. We hope this article has helped you comprehend the many essential details of pizza stones so that you can now make an informed decision. Cheers!
